JOPLIN, Mo. -- Joplin's new independent pro baseball team has a name.
Get ready for the Joplin Blasters. The name was announced Monday afternoon by team ownership

And the winner of the name the team contest is Cliff Mansley, the pastor of new creation church in Joplin.

The team logo was also unveiled and it features the Route 66 sign in the background.

As for the name 'Blasters', Mansley says he also submitted the name Dynamite, but felt like Blasters connected with the tradition of Joplin.

"Kept thinking, well the Miners, the Miners. Well, that may be a little outdated at this point and time.  But I love history, and I wouldn't want to disappoint Brad Belk, our museum guy, so I thought well, what do Miners do? They blast!

There's kinda two different camps, the traditionalists, they wanted to be the Miners. Then another camp that wanted something new, something and something modern," says Shawn Suarez, team general manager.  "And so once we saw the Joplin Blasters, we realized that's a perfect kind of bridging both of it. So hopefully, it's something traditionalists can be proud of but it's also a new and fresh look for Joplin."

The team will begin play at Joe Becker Stadium next year.
