NEW YORK -- Preparations for the annual ball drop in New York's Times Square are in full swing - including a practice run at the drop itself.

The nearly 12,000 pound ball will be lit and sent up a 130 foot pole on top of One Times Square, and then dropped at the stroke of midnight to herald in 2014.

Last week, workers installed about 2600 Waterford crystals.

They form a brand new design called "Gift of Imagination" inspired by a sketch made by a 12-year old patient at St. Jude Children's Hospital.

The giant ball is lit from within by more than 32,000 lights.
