JOPLIN, Mo. -- One man from Joplin, Missouri is riding his bike across the country encouraging people to adopt shelter pets.

Mike Minnick and his dog, Bixby, are on a mission.

Last year he decided he needed to live life like more fully but  he couldn't do that without his best friend.

So he bought a  bike, strapped on a dog carrier and then he and Bixby hit the road.

They've now traveled 6,400 miles, going through 24 states.

Minnick says he wants to send the message, that shelter animals make great pets.

"It just made sense that uh, if we can help other, uh, if we could help other four legged creatures find humans to take care of, then, then, uh it seems like uh, a noble thing to do," Minnick says.

He plans to head to Kansas City before then heading west.

His goal is to reach 10,000 miles by the time he gets to southern California.
