SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Springfield police are saying more about the circumstances surrounding the return of 6-year old boy who was abducted Monday.

Police spokesperson Lisa Cox tells KOLR10 News police negotiated with the man who took the child Monday night, but he refused to turn the child over to police.

His mother told police the man who took the child was her ex-boyfriend, and that the incident escalated after he asked her to come pick the boy up.
The woman told police they got into an argument that turned into a physical fight, and the man walked away with the child.

Later Monday night, the man turned the boy over to a friend of the mother, who took the boy back to his mother's home on S. Douglas.  Police were called to the house after the suspect showed up there and a second assault happened.  The boy was not injured, police said.

The man left the apartment on Douglas after the assault.  Officers are still looking for the man, who has been identified.

Original Story:

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Police are on the lookout for a man suspected of abducting his ex-girlfriend’s six-year-old boy, according to Greene County Dispatch.

Police say around 5:30 p.m. Monday, a child was taken from a residence at 865 S. Douglas in Springfield.

The child’s name is not yet available, but police say they do believe the boy has been taken by the mother’s ex-boyfriend.

According to Lt. Eric Reece with the Springfield Police Department, the mother gave the boy to her ex-boyfriend earlier Monday.  Later, a disagreement between the two lead to a physical altercation and the ex-boyfriend refused to return the boy to his mother.

Reece says that's when the boy's mother called police.

Authorities say they do not believe the child is in danger.

The boy was last seen wearing a red and grey button-up shirt and jean shorts.

Investigators say the boy and the suspect could be in a black BMW, a black GMC Yukon or a white convertible Pontiac Sunfire.

Lt. Reece says they are in contact with the suspect and are working with him to get the child to family in the Springfield-area.
