JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- An execution is scheduled next month for a Missouri inmate convicted of the murder of a man in Cape Girardeau County in 1996.

The Missouri Supreme Court Wednesday set the execution for May 21 for Russell Bucklew.

Bucklew was found guilty in 1997 of the shooting death of Michael Sanders.  Testimony in Bucklew's trial said he suspected his former girlfriend and Sanders were romantically involved.

In March, 1996, Bucklew stole a car and, armed with two pistols, went to Sanders home where he opened fire and shot Sanders in the chest.   According to testimony, Bucklew then forced his former girlfriend, Stephanie Ray, into the car and fled the area.  He was stopped by a trooper on I-55.  Both the trooper and Bucklew were wounded in a shootout.

Last October, the U.S. Supreme Court denied Bucklew's petition for appeal.
