WASHINGTON D.C. – In an announcement on Thursday, Senator Claire McCaskill says she plans to lead a Senate hearing in September to take a closer look at the militarization of local police departments.

The hearing comes after the fatal shooting of Ferguson, Mo. teen Michael Brown by a local police officer, leading to days of rioting and clashes between protesters and local police.

McCaskill says she will use the hearing to examine federal programs that enable local police departments to acquire military equipment. She plans to gather stakeholders from all sides of the issue to hear different perspectives, including local law enforcement.

According to McCaskill’s office, additional details on the hearing will be made available in the coming days.
