Greene County Sheriff's Lt. Christian Conrad tells KOLR10 News it happened near McClernon and Marion just north of Springfield. Neighbors called deputies after noticing a man and a woman in a car in the area, who seemed suspicious.
Conrad says when deputies showed up, the woman stayed in the car, but the man got out and ran. Deputies chased him until he tried to steal a construction truck that was parked nearby.
Greene County Cpl. Cathy Ussery says the truck's owner came out of a nearby construction site to help deputies prevent the theft. Ussery says the suspect pulled out a knife, threatening the deputy. The owner of the truck hung on to it as the suspect took off, and was dragged for some distance before falling off. He suffered a serious injury, possible from hitting his head, Ussery said.
The suspect crashed the truck a short distance away and fled on foot.
Police believed he was armed with a knife
Police, troopers, and deputies were searching the area just to the west of the Lowe's store near Kansas Expressway and I-44. Law enforcement used helicopters, all-terrain vehicles, and K-9 units to try and locate the suspect.
Police received phone calls from citizens reporting they saw the suspect walking nearby.
He was eventually taken into custody in the middle of Kansas Expressway just north of I-44.
Police were unable to give an update on the condition of the victim, a nearby construction worker who tried to stop the man from stealing a truck.
He suffered a serious injury, possible from hitting his head, Ussery said.
Two Greene County Sheriff's Office detectives are currently with the victim at a local hospital.
For the male suspect, charges could range from assault, assault on law enforcement officer, armed criminal action, robbery, and tampering with a motor vehicle, Ussery said.
Police were unable to say what role exactly the female played in the robbery.
