The project has been in the works for years and now bidding is coming to an end for the project.
David Henry owns Hometown Furniture in Rogersville and says he's excited about the future being paved out for his community and Highway 60.
"I think it will only increase growth in our town, our community. I think its really going to help us a lot, hopefully the design is exactly what our town needs."
MODOT plans to upgrade the expressway to a freeway between Springfield and Rogersville.
"Basically, an expressway is a four lane, two lanes, each direction, and access can be at an interchange or at-grade crossings."
Sean Matlock is the project manager and says to do that, the number of access points to the roadway would have to be reduced.
"What that entails is eliminating all those at-grade crossings, the driveways that are connected right on to US 60, eliminating those county roads to US 60."
One of those access points would be right outside of Henry's business at Route B/VV in Webster County. He says he's curious to see how it'll get done.
"We don't have a lot of concerns, just more inquisitive," says Henry.
"We do not want to interrupt any of the businesses around there."
Matlock says the project would also eliminate several stop lights along the freeway, too.
"Anytime you have signals on a high speed corridor like US 60, those are going to be areas of concern, where you are going to have a lot of rear end type accidents."
He says this style of project is a first for Southwest Missouri.
"Designers and contractors are working together and this process lends itself to efficiencies and innovations."
While there's still plenty of questions, Henry says he is excited for what it can do to his community.
"They've really expressed a lot of concern to make sure our community as a business and residential side are covered."
As for a time line on the project, bids for the project will be accepted until April of this year. A contractor will be chosen in June and construction could begin as early this fall. The promised completion is set for December 2016.
