SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Springfield residents may soon find a letter from American Water Resources (AWC) of Missouri in their mailbox selling sewer insurance. The City of Springfield is working to make it known that there is no requirement for citizens to purchase the insurance, and the insurance is not a city-sponsored program.

According to a statement from the City of Springfield, the letter from AWC offers an insurance product called “The Sewer Line Protection Program.” The program provides coverage for private sewer lateral repair.

The City says that while its true property owners are responsible for their private sewer lateral, the City is not requiring citizens to purchase a private lateral insurance policy.

The City sent requested that AWC note in the letter that their insurance product is not a city-sponsored program and has nothing to do with the work underway on the sewer system by Springfield Clean Water Services.

"We have sent a communication to American Water Resources of Missouri telling them that the City does not want them to include any reference or innuendo that the City of Springfield is partnering, approving or condoning the sale of the private lateral insurance product," says Steve Meyer, City of Springfield Environmental Services Director, in a statement.
