SPRINGFIELD, Mo.-- Area firefighters and the general public will participate in the National Fallen Firefighters 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs, August 2.

Participants will climb the stairs of Hammonds Field multiple times for a total of 110 stories, representing the number of floors in the Twin Towers.

The Memorial Climbs are a series of commemorative climbs to honor the 343 members of the Fire Department of New York who died on September 11, 2001.

The second annual Springfield climb is hosted and managed by Ozark Mountain Fraternal Order of Leatherheads Society, The International Association of Firefighters, Local Battalion 152 and the Nixa Fire Protection District.

All firefighters will have the option to start in full gear and carry equipment, just as their fire service brothers did that morning, or wear their work uniforms or gym clothes and simply walk in tribute to the fallen firefighters.

Saturday night is also ‘Firefighter night at the Cardinals’. Prior to the game firefighters from around south west Missouri will have a parade around the field.
