Least of These Food Pantry Finds a New Home

OZARK, Mo. -- A new location will help a food pantry in Christian County provide more services to hungry people in the area.

Least of These Food Pantry is moving from its old location in Nixa to a bigger, more efficient, location in Ozark to meet the growing need.

Kristy Carter, Director of Development, says the old location has met the needs for the last eight years, but is needing more space as more people seek help.

Least of These serves more than 800 families a month in Christian County. The former location for the non-profit was 10,000 square feet.  But organizers say the future site will be nearly double the size..

The non profit has been a lifeline to Nancy Marsh and her husband for two years.

"When you live on fixed income at our age you try not to go into debt. If weren't for Least of These, we would have to get a credit card and buy groceries," explains Marsh.

Carter says the organization has long ago outgrown its space.

"We are currently busting at the seams where we are and we do not have enough space, we do not have the right kind of space," says Carter.

The organization hopes to move to a new, 18,000 square foot location in Ozark.

"We need a permanent stable facility and something that's going to be big enough for our clients," Carter says.

The new location will also simplify and streamline the massive undertaking of providing food for those in need in Christian County.

"They move food four and five times before it ever gets to the client because we just don't have the correct space."

The non-profit is hoping the extra space will eliminate time clients spend in the pantry.

"Being able to provide a place that's nice for them to come, allow them to get in and get out in a quicker fashion frees up more time in their day to look for work or find housing."

But Carter says the biggest hurdle the pantry is facing, is raising the funds for the new location.

"Without that it won't happen."

Carter says they need to raise $500,000 through a challenge grant to be awarded an additional $300,000 to make the move.

"It's not an option. It has to happen."

Carter says the new location will open October of this year.
