JOPLIN, Mo. -- Joplin City Council members have voted to terminate City Manager Mark Rohr.
At the end of a special session late Monday night, Councilman Dr. Benjamin Rosenberg brought forth a Resolution to terminate Rohr as City Manager. Then, in a 5 to 4 vote, the council voted in favor of firing Rohr.
Council members Michael Seibert, Morris Glaze, Mike Woolston and Gary Shaw all voted against the resolution, while Council members Jack Golden, Mayor Melodee Colbert-Kean, Trisha Raney, Dr. Rosenberg and Mayor Pro-Tem Bill Scearce all voted in favor.
Following the vote, Scearce motioned to have City Attorney Brian Head take over as the Interim City Manager, but the Council voted 5 to 4 against the motion

Following that vote, Councilman Woolston motioned to have Assistant City Manager Sam Anselm become the Interim City Manager. That motion passed with a 6 to 3 vote.

About an hour before the meeting started, the City of Joplin posted a job opening for the Assistant City Manager position.  During tonight's session, Rohr made it a point that the Resolution was drafted prior to tonight's meeting.

"It was political. There was agendas at play and other people went along with it. I think there is three people who had an agenda and the other two people went along with it because they're impressionable and they followed their lead," says Mark Rohr, former Joplin City Manager.

It's unclear why Council decided to fire Rohr. He says he is going to look into his legal opportunities and see what recourse he has based on what happened.

Following the termination of Rohr, Mayor Melodee Colbert-Kean reassures the citizens that the City is moving forward and work will continue as usual.

“This was a personnel matter, and we cannot comment on the termination because it is confidential,” says Kean. “Business at the City will proceed as usual. I and the other members of the Council have full confidence in the City staff as they remain diligent to the business and projects we have before us.”
