Holiday Decoration Dangers, How You Can Stay Safe

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates there are about 1,200 fires involving candles during November and December and about 100 involving Christmas trees during the year.

Here are decorating safety tips for the commission:

  • Place your tree away from heat sources.

  • Monitor water levels daily so the tree doesn't dry out.

  • Check each set of lights and extension cords to make sure they are not frayed or damaged.

  • Keep burning candles within eyesight and extinguish them before leaving the room.

  • Keep candles away from items that can catch on fire.

  • Make sure you have a smoke alarm on every floor or your home and in every bedroom.
