Packing up for a trip this holiday week - while you're at it pack some healthy snacks. Eating well at the start of your travels can set a healthy tone for the rest of the vacation.
So what should you bring?
You always want to choose foods that have a good bit of protein and/or fiber because both of those will help to keep you satisfied.
Something as simple as a peanut butter and honey sandwich on whole grain bread and some fruit. Or.....
"Think about bringing nuts, it can be pistachios, walnuts, or even a trail mix that has a little bit of dried fruit in there," suggests Marisa Moore with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
And stay hydrated by bringing water or veggies like snap peas and grape tomatoes.
Eating healthy can also keep you from getting "hangry."
"That is a combination of being angry and hungry," Moore notes. "And that's when that blood sugar drops, everybody tends to get a little testy or a little moody."
And low blood sugar levels can make all the wrong choices look oh so inviting.
To combat this, eat something nutritious every 4 hours and.....
"Make sure you plan for a real meal." Moore says. "Snacking can only get you so far, you have to refuel your body in the same way that you refuel your car."
So schedule a meal stop and eat a well-balanced meal before you get back on the road.
