Q: President Obama last week announced an extension. What is that about?
That extension is for people who have already started the process, but were unable to pick ( a plan), whether it be because of technical problems, whether it be they couldn't choose a plan or make that decision then and there. Coming up in April 1, a box will show up on the Healthcare.gov website. You'll need to click that to get the extension.
Q. You mentioned there may be some technical difficulties. We've already seen it this morning. Do you expect to see more of that during the day?
I would say definitely so, because some folks procrastinate until last minute and, unfortunately, everyone else may have done the same thing.
Q: If you don't get started by midnight tonight, break down the penalty for us.
It goes anywhere from a flat fee of $95 per adult and $47.50 per child or 1% of your income, whichever is greater. Are there any exceptions to this? There's several exceptions. Those that aren't finding the healthcare marketplace affordable for them - if their income is too low. Those that were granted a hardship exemption. All those things will play a role.
You can find sign-up clinics at Mercy and CoxHealth and at Healthcare.gov. You can also call 1-800-318-2596 for more information.
