Groundbreaking Today for New HQ for The Kitchen

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A local organization dedicated to preventing and ending homelessness in the Ozarks, breaks gound on a new $4 million campus in Springfield this morning.

The new home for The Kitchen, Inc. will be located at the corner of Glenstone and Chestnut Expressway.

The campus will be home to a shelter with apartments and office space for 26 case managers as well as some staff housing.

The ground breaking took place at 10 Thursday morning.

Organizers said the new shelter plans to have 13 apartments to help get people off the street while finding them permanent housing. The Kitchen hopes that transition period will take 90 days or less.

Jim Newman, the president of The Kitchen board of trustees, said the new shelter will allow the team of case managers to grow by about 25 percent. He said many other factors went into choosing the specific site location in north Springfield.

"It's still staying in north Springfield, which is where a lot of our constituents is and people come for help,” Newman said. “It's also on a bus line, which will help people go to get facilities that they need or services that they need."

Newman said the project should be ready to house people beginning in fall 2018.
