Greene County Approves PDMP

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Greene County Commissioners have joined other government leaders around Missouri in approving a Prescription Drug Monitoring Program locally.

The Springfield City Council also signed off the PDMP Monday night, which will be overseen by the Springfield-Greene County Health Department.

The PDMP would take 5 minutes out of a pharmacist's day to report the dispensing of all controlled substances to a centralized and password protected database.

It will give a physician or other prescriber such as a dentist the opportunity to look at the prescriptions that their patients filled and medically manage them accordingly.

Ultimately the program will make it obvious if a person is doctor shopping and it will work in conjunction with the statewide PDMP.   Last week, Gov. Eric Greitens signed an executive order, establishing a statewide program after the legislature failed to approve one during the 2017 session.

"One of the things that we want to make sure here is that if there were something that were to delay the implementation of the PDMP at a state level that we would have our PDMP in place here in Springfield," said Assistant Springfield-Greene County Health Director Katie Towns. The state says it won't interfere with PDMP's that have already been implemented.
