Green Thumbs Learn to Take Care of Hostas

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Green thumbs got their hands dirty at the Dig and Divide Hosta Seminar and Sale.

The Greater Ozarks Hosta Society taught budding botanists how to successfully multiply plants, alongside teaching proper techniques for hosta gardening.

It took place at the Springfield Greene County Botanical Center Saturday morning.

Hostas are best known for their ability to thrive in shady areas.

The Ozarks Hosta Society hosts this hands-on event to teach how successfully divide and grow healthy hostas.

"You just dig 'em out of the ground. Wash the roots off. Then you can just take a knife and cut through the crown. Break it apart. Pull it apart. Then you just plant this in the ground. Next year you'll have a real nice hosta and in seven years you'll have a mature hosta,"  President of the Greater Ozarks Hosta Society Tom Lakowske said.

Lakowske says hostas are the number one perennial in the world.

He adds they make a lovely low maintenance addition to any garden.
