Why it Matters: There are several things that come into play here. First, more and more women are refusing to be tied down to stereotypes. Second, since life (and the search for “what do I want to be”) doesn’t come with an instruction manual, people are looking for navigational cues and people to help guide them through their choices—and money talks. Finally, there are more female mentors who are helping young women understand that it’s OK to be a geek, and that there are some great opportunities out there if they pursue an interest in math, science and tech. Sometimes all it takes is someone to tell you what’s possible, and Google is doing just that.
