Jennifer A. Gunter, 34, of Republic, plead guilty to stealing more than $316,000 from several elderly customers’ accounts and failing to report the embezzled income on her taxes on Sept. 12, 2013.
According to U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri Tammy Dickinson, Gunter was the branch manager at the Guaranty Bank at 291 Hwy. CC in Nixa, and earlier at 1341 W. Battlefield in Springfield, since Aug. 2005 until her termination in Nov. 2012.
Dickinson says Gunter’s fraud was detected when she issued and authorized three checks on the bank account of a victim who had died the previous day.
Gunter later admitted that, from Dec. 2006 until Nov. 2012, she repeatedly accessed the bank accounts of four elderly customers and embezzled a total of $316,598.
Gunter set the customer accounts to a “do not mail” status so the customers wouldn’t receive their bank statements. She submitted transaction tickets, withdrawal slips and cashier’s checks with forged names of the account holders to withdraw the money from the account.
According to Dickinson, she used the money for personal matters and expenses.
She also failed to report the embezzled income on her income tax return, totaling a tax loss of $50,140.
During the sentencing hearing on Thursday, the court also ordered her to pay a total of $547,897 in restitution.
