At the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year, students were introduced to the project with a special educational video about the local organization Children Taking A Stand.
Students then entered into an age-appropriate conversation about child abuse, led by a team member from The Victim Center. Then, throughout the year, students were encouraged to respond to the issue by creating artwork.
In its first year, kindergarten through fourth-grade students produced artworks in collaboration with the local art group Art Renegades. In addition, fifth-grade students produced drawings that then were etched into glass or burned into copper, forging a metal art project designed by local artist Jim Carr.
Artworks were sold at local art events and at auction throughout the year. In total, the students' artwork raised $6,000 for the Child Advocacy Center, The Victim Center and CASA of Southwest Missouri.
Students will present three checks to the three local organizations at pm June 3 at Robberson Community School in Springfield.
