NIXA, Mo. -- A new program in Nixa is taking special measures to keep kids safe.

The Nixa Police Department started Safety Town this week. It's a program for kids ages 4, 5, and 6, and it's the first of its kind in southwest Missouri.

It helps teach kids rules they should know before they start elementary school.

Among the topics are animal safety, stranger safety, traffic, and what 911 is used for.

Youngsters took to the streets of a miniature town today to practice safety rules. Sponsors constructed the area.

The class runs from 9 to 11 a.m. June 23-27 and June 30- July 2 at the Nixa Community Center.

A graduation ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. July 3.
