JOPLIN, Mo. -- The Missouri governor was in Joplin Wednesday to help celebrate the official opening of Soaring Heights Middle School.

Hundreds of students, parents, teachers and officials gathered at the East 20th Street campus for a ribbon cutting today. The ceremony included speeches by Governor Nixon, the superintendent, and school board presidents. The principal pointed out that the ceremony is a way to thank all those who supported the school through the transition process.

"Duenweg, Duquesne and Joplin have just always been right there supporting education. And so having the opportunity to bring them in and thank them for everything they've done to support us is really a big deal for us," said Teresa Adams, Soaring Heights Principal.

Fourth and fifth graders also got a chance to take the stage, adding some music to the festivities.
