SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- March is National Reading Month, and educators and librarians across the state hope Missouri families will help their kids find a lifetime love of reading this month.

Julie Douglas, the family program director with the Missouri Humanities Council, says reading should be a family affair that is enjoyable for both caregivers and children. And reading to kids when they're young can set the stage for the learning they'll do in school.

The council says in today's world of electronic distractions, it's important to help kids get back to basics. Some studies show too much "screen time" can slow down learning for young children.
