Dr. Barbara Bumberry - Importance of Calcium in Your Diet

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Everyone is always telling you as a kid drink your milk, and it is an important source of calcium, but calcium does come in different forms, and it's important to make sure you get your amount. 

Dr. Barbara Bumberry from Mercy Hospital  joins us to explain the importance of calcium in our diets


Calcium Facts:

-Necessary for bone and teeth development

-Daily needs - 1000 mg for men and women under 50, 1200 mg for women over 50

-The average American gets about 300 mg daily in their diet

-Calcium carbonate is cheaper and has higher amounts of elemental calcium

-Calcium citrate can be taken on an empty stomach

-Coral calcium may have elevated levels of lead

-Don't forget the Vitamin D - 600-800 iu daily

Sources of Calcium:

-8 oz milk 300 mg

-8 oz fortified orange juice 300 mg

-6 oz yogurt 250 mg

-1/2 cup cottage cheese 130 mg

-Also, almonds, cooked beans, oranges

Concerns about Calcium Supplements:

-Analysis of multiple studies showed no increased risk for Heart Disease

-Studies were either too small or not designed to measure heart disease outcomes

-1 observational study showed increased risk for dementia. Other studies show no risk

-Calcium supplements may increase risk of kidney stones in those susceptible, but not dietary calcium
