Dickerson Park Zoo Names Newest Giraffe Calf

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Dickerson Park Zoo has decided on a name for a recent addition to their giraffe family.

On Aug. 18, the Zoo’s 9-year-old giraffe named Emma gave birth to her second calf.

The Zoo left it to social media to decide the name of the newborn boy. On an online poll, voters got to choose between Alex, Daryl and Mrefu.

The votes were tallied Monday night and the calf was officially named Mrefu, a Swahili word meaning tall.

Mrefu and his mother can be seen in the exhibit yard, along with giraffes Gidget, Cheka, and four juveniles (Pammy J, Caley, Mili and Anna Belle).

Gidget is actually Mrefu’s grandmother and the oldest giraffe in the Zoo’s herd.

Mrefu’s father, Peperuka, is in a separate yard, but still visible to the public.
