Detective Says Wife Shot First in 2013 Lawrence County Murder Trial

MOUNT VERNON, Mo.-- A Lawrence County man is on trial this week for the murder of his wife in 2013.

Investigators back then accused David Holman of shooting his wife, Radonna Holman in their home.  Defense attorney Jason Coatney says a detective Wednesday testified the wife apparently shot Holman first.

The defense contends David Holman had entered his home from the cold and was shaking off his clothing when Radonna fired a shot.  Medical personnel testified this week Holman suffered a tricep entry wound and bicep exit wound consistent with being hit from behind.   Coatney says it was then that Holman returned fire, killing his wife.

Coatney tells KOLR10 the motive centered around family property Holman would inherit upon the death of his mother.

Prosecuting Attorney Don Trotter argued in 2016 before the state Supreme Court, claiming that David Holman did not invoke his right to an attorney before telling deputies that he had shot his wife in their La Russell area home.

Holman's attorney said that statement shouldn't be allowed in court. That's because when deputies asked Holman to sign a form allowing them to search his home, he told them he wouldn't sign anything without an attorney.

Lawrence County Circuit judge Jack Goodman ruled Holman's statements could not be used as evidence at Holman's trial. The Missouri Court of Appeals later ruled that the statement could be used.

The trial is ongoing.
