Daybreak Football Preview: Branson vs Carthage

BRANSON, Mo -- It's week 3 of the high school football season, and teams are finally beginning to show their strength.

KOLR10 Daybreak has been featuring teams each week, and this week focuses on a team that has turned some heads early in the season.

The Branson Pirates enter week 3 of the season at 1-1, falling to Nixa on the road last week.

"I'm just excited about my guys this year because they fight. We have had 2 games where we have been down in the 4th quarter, and we have come back to give ourselves a chance to win," said Branson coach, Anthony Hays.

The Pirates went for a game winning field goal, however that kicked was blocked by 6'6" Division 1 recruit Alex Allen. He's the son of long-time Missouri State Bears head coach Terry Allen, and his big brother, Chase, is currently playing for the Iowa State Cyclones.

"That was a tough loss, but our guys are resilient, and with that kind of resiliency, we have a good chance to make a run this year," said Hays.

Anthony Hays will enter his 3rd game at the helm of the Pirates, newly hired from Parkview High School in Springfield.

"Offensively, we are going to have to keep the ball away from Carthage," said Hays. "They have some explosive guys, and a really good wide receiver."

The Tigers are no strangers to winning, although they are still looking for their 1st win on the year.

Carthage fell to Ozark by 6 in week 1, and then to powerhouse Webb City. Despite the losses, wide receiver Jordan Morgan and running back Clay Newman have put in solid work this early into the season.

"They are known for having great skill guys and great speed," said Hays. "They've been one of the better teams in southwest Missouri and the state the last couple of years, and are definitely going to have our work cut out for us."

"Hopefully our offense can help our defense by keeping them off the field."

Kickoff for this game will be at 7pm at Branson High School.

Complete high school football coverage will be on KOLR10 tonight at 10pm with Dan Lucy, Megan Rice, and Dan Molloy.

1st and 10's Game of the Week will be in Lebanon, as the Yellow Jackets take on Camdenton.
