Couple Faces Abuse Charges After Infant Suffers Burns, Skull Fracture

PARK HILLS, Mo. -- Charges of felony abuse of a child have been filed against a St. Francois County, Missouri couple, after they took their infant child to the hospital with multiple injuries, including some that may have been caused by a microwave oven.

St. Louis CBS affiliate KMOV reports the charging documents from the St. Francois County Prosecuting Attorney's Office show Derick Boyce-Slezak, 22, and Mikala Boyce-Slezak, also 22, are charged.

The charges were filed after a hearing this week with Mikala and an investigator about the child's injuries.

KMOV reports the probable cause statement shows the investigator stated that the child was taken to the hospital due to a rash on his face, which later was determined to be a wound. In addition to that wound, the child was suffering from a skull fracture and a small left subdural hematoma.

The wound ended up being a first and second-degree burn, according to the Probable Cause statement. At the hospital, it was reported the burn came from a cleaning agent.

During the April testimony, the investigator said, Mikala Boyce-Slezak stated someone had cleaned the infant's face with a towel that contained a bleach-like substance. When asked about the child's other injuries, she pleaded the fifth amendment. Derick did not testify, according to the PC statement.

Later, the PC statement says, an employee with Children's Protective Services, stated that Mikala said she believes Derick placed the infant in a microwave and turned it on for a short period of time. She also allegedly stated in the April hearing that Derick dropped the infant while trying to imitate what he saw on a television commercial.
