Charges Filed in Lake Double Homicide

MILLER COUNTY, Mo. -- Court documents released Thursday reveal new information about a shooting that killed two people at Lake Ozark early Wednesday.

The Miller County Prosecutor Thursday charged Gary Lynn Sweet, 58, of Rolla, with two counts of first degree murder, two counts of assault and four counts of armed criminal action.

According to the probable cause statement filed in support of the criminal charges, officers were called to the Riverview RV Park on Woodriver Road  shortly after 12:30 a.m. November 8.  A man and woman told officers gunshots were fired into their RV around midnight.  The man was struck by fragments, but had minor injuries.

The Mid-Missouri Major Crimes Task Force was called in, with officers from several agencies arriving at the park. When they did a full search, they found the bodies of two people in the park office building.  They were found lying in bed with apparent gunshot wounds, the PC statement states.  The door to the building had been forced open.  The names of the victims had not been released as of late morning Thursday.

Investigators say Gary Sweet's name came up during the investigation  because Sweet was a former tenant of the park, but was evicted in October by the people who were found dead.  Other tenants said the people killed acted as managers of the park.  One tenant said they had seen someone matching Sweet's description outside the RV at the time of the shooting.

According to the court documents, a Highway Patrol trooper contacted Sweet at his home in Phelps County, and Sweet claimed he was at home at the time of the shooting.  However Sweet's cellphone records were tracked and showed his number pinged off cell towers in Lake Ozark at the time of the shooting.

16 gaage shotgun shells were recovered from the crime scene, according to the PC statement.  And a 16 gauge shotgun and shells were recovered from Sweet's home.  Investigators also have surveillance video from the campground.

Sweet was arrested and taken to the Phelps County Jail.  He was transferred to Miller County Thursday.
