LAMPE, Mo. -- Table Rock Lake could soon be home to a new multi-million dollar development. After nearly 12 years of planning and searching, Colorado based Young Life, broke ground a new camp in Stone County Tuesday.
"Clearwater Cove" will sit on roughly 270 acres in Lampe, Missouri, potentially drawing in thousands of kids from the surrounding states.
"We're building a campground that's a little unique," says Young Life Vice President of Development Scott Nilsen, "The target is kind of what we call the further out kids, kids that aren't currently involved in church."
Nilsen says the camp also doesn't discriminate based on religious affiliation,
"The young life mission is for every kid," he says. "We've got ministries for kids with disabilities, young teen moms, multi-cultural urban, rural... you name it."
"You name it," can also be applied to the amenities that will eventually sit on the lakeside property. Roughly $21 million will be invested to put in a multipurpose center, a baseball field, club house, dining hall, water activities, and lodging for roughly 250 kids.
"This just opened the door for hundreds and hundreds of more kids," says Sam Radar. The Young Life Executive Campaign Committee says right now the some two dozen camps Young Life operates are located near the coasts, making Clearwater Cove an anchor in the Midwest.
"We have a waiting list, Young Life has to decide, which is a tough call, on which kids can go and which kids can't," says Radar. The Tulsa native also says if Clearwater Cove has success, another phase of development could begin in the future, helping to house upwards of 350 kids.
"We're giving kids and opportunity to really experience the best week of their life," says Scott Nilsen, "And hear about the message of Jesus Christ."
Young Life has currently raised roughly $8 million of the some $21 million needed for the development. It’s expected to be open by the Summer of 2015.
