Youth of the Year recognizes outstanding contributions to a member’s family, school, community and Boys & Girls Club, as well as overcoming personal challenges and obstacles.
Couch is a senior at Central High and has been a member of the club since 2002.
As part of the award, she received a $12,000 scholarship to use when she goes to college next year. It's something, she says, wouldn't have been possible without the Boys and Girls Club.
"I wouldn't be going to college,” says Couch. “I learned how to read at the Boys and Girls Club, and they've really helped me grow and become part of my high school, and really have shown that I can actually do it. So, without them, college wouldn't have been an option and I might not have graduated from high school."
Couch will now be in the running for the state's Youth of the Year, which will be held April 8-9 in Jefferson City.
The winner of the State Youth of the Year competition will win a $1,000 college scholarship from Tupperware Brands Corporation.
