Box Office Buzz - August 3, 2017

Hello Movie Maniacs!  A new movie based on a Stephen King novel, a thriller with Halle Berry, and a drama based on real events in Detroit in the late 60's!

New at the box this weekend:

THE DARK TOWER (COLUMBIA PICTURES) - The last Gunslinger has been locked in an eternal battle and with the fate of the worlds at stake, good and evil will collide in the ultimate battle!  Matthew McConauhey and Idris Elba star.  The Dark Tower is a series of eight books which span an entire connected universe which links several other books and stories by Stephen King,.

Also on screens, receiving a lot of acclaim, DETROIT (ANNAPURNA DISTRIBUTION) - Amidst the chaos of the Detroit Rebellion, with the city under curfew and as the Michigan National Guard patrolled the streets, three young African American men were murdered at the Algiers Motel.  KATHRYN BIGELOW directed this and she is one of my VERY faves!  She's responsible for my guilty pleasure, the original PONT BREAK as well as THE HURT LOCKER AND ZERO DARK THIRTY, Bigelow is VERY skilled at the art of suspense.

And finally, KIDNAP (AVIRON PICTURES) - Halle Berry is a mother who stops at nothing to recover her kidnapped son.

Tops at the box last weekend:

The epic DUNKIRK is TOPS of the BOX!  THE EMOJI MOVIE debuts at NUMBER TWO and GIRLS TRIP holds onto NUMBER 3.  ATOMIC BLONDE debuts at NUMBER 4 - which is LOWER than this flick deserves.  It's one of the best at the box now.  This flick is super stylish and slick, however, QUITE violent.  Charlize Theron is cool and the action is FANTASTIC!

New on Blu-Ray this week:

THE CIRCLE (LIONSGATE ENTERTAINMENT) - A woman lands a dream job at a powerful tech company called the Circle, only to uncover an agenda that will affect the lives of all of humanity.  Tom Hanks and Emma Watson star in this very BELOW average flick for BOTH of these talents.

And, our second average flick new on Blu-Ray this week is GOING IN STYLE (WARNER BROS.) - Desperate to pay the bills and come through for their loved ones, three lifelong pals risk it all by embarking on a daring bid to knock off the very bank that absconded with their money.  Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Alan Arkin star.
