PCs may not be thriving the way they once were, but Microsoft has shown that cloud storage and computing is thriving. Microsoft posted a strong set of financials for the fourth quarter of its 2014 financial year on the back of substantial, sustained growth in its cloud businesses. Microsoft’s revenue was up almost 20 percent thanks to the new access-anywhere platform.

Why it Matters: Cloud storage has become a hot and much hyped term, but few people have truly unlocked the full potential of the service. While cloud computing may not save possessions, it can keep memories safe from disaster. Regardless of what happens, cloud storage can recover anything put into it, from pictures and letters, to music and video. This is leading people to start archiving their lives in cloud storage in an effort to not only preserve it for future generations of family members, but also to protect the content from destruction.
