At around 2:40 p.m. Friday, an Amber Alert was issued for 3-year-old Jaden Hanson, who was taken from his mother by force by his father.
Webb said Bolivar police received notice of the abduction around 12 p.m. Friday and quickly alerted Polk County and Springfield law enforcement and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Shortly after the alert was issued, a City Utilities worker spotted a car matching the description of the white Hyundai car listed as a suspect vehicle. The worker followed the car and alerted police.
"I was just doing my job," says the unnamed worker in a statement from City Utilities. "Everyone should take time to watch and take care of our kids."
Springfield police were able to track the location where the suspect was with the child took Jaden into protective custody.
Webb says the recent abduction of Hailey Owens and involvement of citizens responding to the abduction played a vital role in finding the boy.
“I think that's put everyone on a heightened state of awareness to the situation,” says Webb. “When they do occur they are serious. You have to thank the good citizens for being eyes and ears to follow up and pay attention to vehicles that may be matching the description. It enhances the ability of law enforcement while working with the citizens to bring these incidents to a successful resolution.”
The Amber Alert for Jaden was cancelled around 5:20 Friday evening.
Jamil Hanson has been taken into police custody with charges pending, according to Webb.
Springfield Police Department's Lt. Culley Wilson says the suspect came into custody without incident.
"There were three other children in the house," Wilson says. "They came out without any problems, they were not injured, a little scared. We got them reunited with their parents, and the suspect, we called him out and first he took a little time, but he came out without any problems and cooperated."
Neighbors lined the streets throughout the incident to see the outcome of the abduction scare.
"It's tragic, but it's a good ending," says neighbor Ken Jones.
Jamil Hanson has been formally charged with parental kidnapping and first-degree burglary in Polk County.
His bond is set at $50,000.
