Back to School Assistance Program Gives Free Supplies

Parents Make it Work on a Budget

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – With less than a dozen days before Springfield Public Schools are back in session,  the countdown is on for students to fill their backpacks before the fall semester starts.

Schools supply shopping might be a fun time of year for some families, but for others unsure where the money for supplies will come from, back to school can cause a lot of anxiety. Saturday, Noble Hill Baptist Church tried to alleviate some of that stress.

Mom Jennifer Ransom reached into her bag to see what she got.

"So let's see, we've got notebooks and pencils and highlighters,” Ransom said. "I'm on disability so every little bit counts."

Noble Hill Baptist Church’s school supply giveaway attracted a long line of parents like the Ransom’s, wanting to provide the best for their kids on a budget.

"It's a relief, it's stuff I won't have to buy right now,” Lance Knight, another parent in line, said.

"School supplies are probably the biggest part. Clothes are not as bad because we can do the DAV when they do their half off, it makes it very nice,” she said. “That's actually where we're headed next.”

Studies show supplying kids with what they need for school will also help equip them with comfort and confidence in the classroom. The Ransom family has stepped foot in one or two classrooms before, with two fourth-graders and one starting high school.

School supplies never get cheaper, but with the help of assistance programs like this one, mom’s shopping has gotten smarter.

There will be other chances to get free school supplies if parents have signed up with the Victory Mission or Salvation Army. The Salvation Army is still looking for donations and volunteers to make this year’s school assistance program happen. It had 1,200 children sign up for supplies this year, which is 400 more than in 2016.
