SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Greenwood Laboratory School students learned the proper way to plant and mulch a young tree.

Friday, students went outside as part of Springfield's Arbor Day celebration.  Local members of the Arbor Day Foundation were there to give Missouri State University a Tree Campus USA Award, which honors colleges and universities’ efforts in conservation and forestation.
City Utilities received an award for its efforts to plant trees.  And Greenwood 5th grader Brayden O'Neal drew the winning Arbor Day poster.

"At first I had it with water, but my teachers told me it was more about trees instead of water," O'Neal said.

His poster was also chosen as the most popular statewide.
