GOLDEN, Mo. – Another U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campground could be closing this year. The Viney Creek Recreation Area on Table Rock Lake near Golden, Mo. is the target this time.
Mike Vreeland has been fishing Table Rock lake for decades. He tried a first by dropping his boat at the Viney Creek Recreation Area on Monday.
"Its just amazing, there is so much timber in the lake and the fishing was actually easy," says Vreeland.
It may be his last time after the Corps of Engineers announced it may not open the campground or boat ramps this season.
"Its targeted right now for a full closure."
Greg Oller is the lake manager and says funding is to blame after receiving $600,000 less this year from the federal funding.
"When you have small campgrounds, your operation maintenance cost go up and, unfortunately, that is what happened on Table Rock," says Oller.
Viney Creek has plenty of campsites, as well as, a playground area and swimming area but its missing one essential thing. It doesn’t have a commercial marina connected to it so that makes it easier to close.
But business owners, like Lane Shumaker, say its hard to understand how funding is down.
"I've lived here my whole life and I've seen a lot of people come and go to the campsite and enjoyed it. You know, I just don’t understand why it would need to close."
He owns Battery Outfitters and says as far as business goes, he hates to see it go.
"We have them (boaters) come in quite often, they say, we are so glad you are here because, you know, when you are down here you are kind of in the middle of nowhere that’s why people come this end of the lake," says Shumaker.
Greg says they hate closing any campground but there are other options for boaters like Mike.
"There are seven other public areas in close proximity that the public can use to gain access to Table Rock Lake."
That is something Mike says will not turn him away from the lake.
"I haven’t seen this water in the last ten years like this, I just wanted to take a look at it more than anything today."
