$654,505 Awarded to Springfield Fire Department for More Firefighters

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Seven firefighters will come to the Springfield Fire Department after a Department of Homeland Security program awarded a $654,505 grant to the fire department.

The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Program grant provides the salaries and benefits for three years with a local match of 25 percent in the first two years and 65 percent in the third year, according to a news release.

“This grant provides us the opportunity for an increase in staffing required for the possible addition of a new fire station in the West Central area of Springfield,” said Fire Chief David Pennington.

A 2011 SAFER award added nine personnel as a step toward staffing a West Central station.

"Placing a new fire station in this area would significantly improve response times to the West Central area, and would have a significant effect on our standard of cover, impacting the delivery of emergency services throughout the community," Pennington said.

It costs $1,061,361 to add the seven firefighters and the City of Springfield expects to keep them after the three years.

On Sept. 5, City Council will vote on whether to accept the grant. If accepted, the fire department must fill the positions within 180 days.
